Our Mission
Big Bear Honey was founded by Jacob and Kelly Bonnema in Zeeland, Michigan, with a simple mission: support local beekeepers, care for honeybees, and share the sweetness of life with everyone around us.
1997: How it all began.
Jacob and Kelly first crossed paths in South Africa—Kelly studying primary health care for underserved communities, and Jacob serving near Mount Kilimanjaro and in the Kalahari Desert. Jacob grew up learning hard work and animal care on his family’s dairy farm, while Kelly’s childhood was filled with days on Lake Michigan, fishing and exploring the outdoors with her father. They both shared a love for nature and a calling to serve others—and it was love at first sight. After returning to the U.S., Jacob moved to Michigan to be with Kelly, and five months later they married.
Today: Faith, Family, and Sweet Adventures
Nearly three decades later, Jacob and Kelly still work side by side, bringing creativity and joy to everything they do. Their five children are grown and married, and the buzz of grandchildren keeps life lively. Inspired by the beehive, they’re devoted to supporting our smallest farmers—the honeybees—whose pollination makes our food and health possible. Curating specialty flavored honey for family, friends, and neighbors has turned into a life that’s simple, sweet, and full of adventure.
